Why are my friends receiving a reply saying that I have exeeded my mailbox quota when they try to send me e-mails?

If this is the case then your mailbox might have reached it's limit of 20MB. To repair this problem, you might try to delete some emails from your mailbox, remove items from the trash folder in webmail, delete sent items from webmail, or else you can increase your mailbox quota by visiting www.maltanet.net/manage .

What should I do if my mailbox is full?

You need to empty your mailbox by logging on to www.maltanet.net/webmail and choose those mails you do not need and click on Delete. Note that all the e-mails that you have deleted will be moved to the Trash folder. Click on 'refresh folder list' on your top left and the word (purge) will be displayed next to the Treash folder. Just click on (purge) to delete them permanently.
Alternatively you may call at our offices and sign a document, which authorises us to clear your entire mailbox.  This includes all your e-mail messages and contacts stored on our server.

But I have downloaded all my e-mails to outlook - how could it be that my mailbox is full?

If you are using outlook or another e-mail programme and people are receiving this message, then you must have a setting in your software, which states " leave a copy of messages on server". If this is active, although your mails are being downloaded to your computer, a copy is left on the server thus taking of your mailbox space. To remove this setting follow the instructions below :

1. Open your Outlook .
2. Go on 'Tools' and click on 'Accounts'.
3. Click on the 'Mail' tab.
4. Double click on the maltanet account or highlight it and click on 'Properties'.
5. Click on the Advanced tab.
6. Make sure that 'Leave a copy of messages on server' is not selected.

Email (outlook error 554)

I am trying to send e-mails but I am getting error 554

This indicates that our mail server is blocking your e-mail.

Possible causes

1. You may be sending e-mails to a large number of users at one go.

In the first instance you need to ensure that you are authorised to send bulk e-mail to a large number of users. If the mail is of a commercial nature, you need to ensure that the receiver has given you authorisation to send him/her such mails. If you do have authorisation, try sending such mails in smaller "bundles", Alternatively, if you require sending such e-mails on a frequent basis, you may contact our Customer Service personnel, to discuss alternative solutions.

2. The content of your mail is being considered as Spam or considered as a Virus by our servers.

If you are sure that the content of the e-mails is legitimate, then you should try sending the content as an attachment (as a word document or any other format). If the mail contains a file but cannot get through, you may want to try Compressing the file using software such as "Winzip" or "Winrar"

3. If the problem is still there try to create a New e-mail account by clicking on the link below :

What is "Spam" ?

Spamming is a term used to define the sending of unsolicited mail to a large number of e-mail addresses. Typical Spam e-mails would be promoting or encouraging recipients to take advantage of "Get rich quick" schemes, offer recipients a "once in a life time offer" or similar. Other spams include/promote the sales of medicine or drugs, investment schemes or adult content sites.

Why do I receive spam e-mails ?

Normally, the spammer would have obtained your e-mail address without your consent through other e-mails sent to you by friends etc. or some other illegitimate manner. Some Spammers also use automatic e-mail address generators that create thousands of random e-mail addresses and simply send their message to these addresses, in the hope that most of the addresses are actual e-mail addresses.

What can I do to prevent spam mail ?

There is very little you can do to stop receiving spam since spammers will always find a way to get your address, however some tips that might help prevent spam are :-

a) Use caution when Unsubscribing

Most spam e mails include an option for recipients to unsubscribe - except in the case of e mails received from local e mail marketers, and unless you are convinced that the sender is genuine - DO NOT UNSUBSCRBE as this only serves to confirm that your e mail address is a valid address.

You should only use the unsubscribe option if you had previously subscribed to the mailing list.

b) Chain e mails
As in real life, chain e-mails promise luck, health or wealth instantly if the e-mail is sent to other addresses, - doom and gloom if you break the chain. Obviously, such e-mails cannot deliver what they promise and normally these mails are a clever way spammers use to obtain multiple addresses.

When you receive such chain e-mail, you should not forward it to any of your contacts as you could unknowingly be forwarding your address and that of all your contacts to the spammer.

c) Use the BCC function
Most e-mail programmes have a BCC - "Blind Carbon Copy" option.

This function enables you to send an e-mail to a large number of users, without disclosing the names of the recipients of the mail.

The function should be used whenever you send a mail to a large group of contacts, especially when the recipients of the mail are not know to each other. A typical example would be to advise your contacts that you have changed your mobile phone number or e-mail address. In such cases you should send the mail to your own e-mail address and include all the other e-mail addresses in the BCC field.

d) Report spam

maltaNET as an ISPs takes a serious stand against spam and will take action against their users if found to be spamming. In order to report a user to, simply send a copy of the e mail received, to customercare@maltanet.net , including the full e mail headers, and all essential details required.

Is it illegal to send e-mail to more than one recipient ?

An obvious advantage of e-mail is that it doesn't cost anything extra to send a mail to 1,000 addresses than it does to send to a single address. This is also the disadvantage with e-mail.

If you want to send your "News" or "Special Offers" to your list of contacts, always ensure that :-
a) you use the BCC function

b) ensure that the people you are sending the mail to, would be interested in the mail sent and that you include instructions what they should do if they do not want to receive similar messages from you.

A word of caution, if you continue to send unsolicited mail, you will be prone to attack from other spammers, and your ISP might even decide to block access to your account.

What can I do to stop receiving spam ?

Unfortunately not much. However, reporting spam e-mails as described above, will help ISPs fight spam.

Finally, although spam can be a bother, remember that should you continue to receive spam mail, it cannot harm. All you need to do is delete the mail without reading it. Although with certain e-mail programmes you can create "rules" to move spam mail to a folder, these rules do not work all the time, especially since spammers have various tricks to fool the rules.

Can I change my username to stop receiving SPAM?

Whilst changing your username may solve the problem, you need to ensure that when you select a new username, you will choose one that is not easily replicated. Normally people whose username is a noun or common noun -

Example john or mary

fall victims to lots of spam e-mail as it is easy to such spam programs to guess such a username.

Note that you may change your username for Free upon expiry of your current subscription by calling at our offices in Balzan

Alternatively, if you would not like to wait until you account expires, you may change your username at a charge of Lm11.50.

(Note that a change of username cannot be done on-line since we would require you to present identification).

Why do I recieve virus warnings in my mailbox?

I am receiving various e-mail telling me that I m sending a virus to other people when I am sure that my computer is clean.

The reason for this happening could be coming from the fact that another person who happens to have your e-mail address on his system has a virus and this virus is sending mails to various people with your e-mail address as the sender.

Unfortunately, in this case it is very difficult to establish who the actual sender is and this will only clear itself out once the user gets to know that he/she has a virus on his system and cleans it out.

Such a problem has become very common recently following the various outbreaks.

May we also recommend that you scan on your system to be 100% sure that it is virus free. (Please ensure that you have the latest updates).

If you do not have any antivirus software installed in you system, you may carry out a scan for free online by visiting :
